Chapter 7

Katie could not wait to call Becca. She would never believe this. Katie wasn't sure she believed it. She went into the studio and grabbed a Diet Coke out of the fridge in the prop room. She sat down on the sofa in the reception area of the studio and dialed Becca.

"I have been waiting for you to call! What took you so long?" Becca answered impatiently. She knew it was Katie by her ring tone.

"Well, hello to you, too." Katie snapped back.

"Sorry. You have been gone forever! I need some news."

"Ok, calm down. I will tell you. But first guess what??" Katie was still shaking.

"Kat! Don't mess with me here. What?" Becca asked urgently.

"He asked me out for dinner on Saturday night. He is sending his driver for me. I must be dreaming. Can you believe it?"

"Let me get this straight. First you do a photo shoot with Jon Bon Jovi. Then he takes you out to lunch, and invites you to dinner?" Clearly Becca was having trouble processing it all. Well, Katie thought, so am I.

"Not quite. He didn't take me out for lunch. I paid." Katie corrected her.

"What? You paid? Kat. Did he even offer?" Becca laughed hysterically.

"Yes, he did. But I had to fight him for it." Katie stated sounding no less than victorious.

"Kat. This is Jon Bon Jovi. I think he can afford to buy you a burger."

"Well, he drove, so it was only fair." Katie defended herself.

Becca chuckled at her friend. "You are so independent and stubborn sometimes. I hope you didn't offend him.

'Uh, no. I don't think so. He did ask to see me again. And I will let him pay this time."

"Good." Becca shook her head. She loved Katie dearly, but sometimes.....

After hanging up with Becca, Katie decided to download the photos from the shoot before the bus dropped the kids off from camp. She was going to spend tomorrow with them before they jetted off on vacation with their dad. As much as she loved them, she was looking forward to a few weeks of no work and no kids. Funny how once she decided it was ok to take some time off, how excited she was for that time. It was turning out to be a very interesting summer indeed. She watched the file numbers ticking away as they downloaded on to her Macbook. As the thumbnails flashed one after another, she started to feel those butterflies again. She would need to sit and regroup tonight after the kids went to bed. Maybe she would have a glass of wine and listen to some music, something besides Bon Jovi, since at the moment that was the least calming music she could think of.

Once the pictures finished loading, Katie decided to sit back and run a slideshow of them, just to get an idea of what she was able to capture earlier in the day. She breathed a deep sigh as she leaned back into the chair, the screen turning to black, and the first photo popped up, slowly transitioning into the next. They were good. Very good. If she could be guaranteed subjects this easy to photograph, she would do more commercial work herself. He really was a work of art, his chiseled features, the smile, the eyes, the sculpted body that he obviously spent hours in the gym on. This was one session she couldn't wait to proof.

After the slide show finished, Katie turned off the computer and the studio lights on her way out. Her mind kept slipping back to when he had asked to see her again. What was she going to wear? It seemed a shopping trip might just be in order Saturday morning. As Katie walked up the drive towards the carriage house, she could hear the bus pulling up in front of the driveway. She pushed aside her excited thoughts, put a big smile on her face and turned around to greet the kids.

The black BMW sailed smoothly down the highway towards Boston. Jon usually had a cd playing, but all he heard was the rush of the air against the car as he drove. He was the picture of cool sophistication with the black sunglasses on, the top down and his hands confidently placed on the wheel. But the thoughts inside of his head were a combination of contentment, surprise, anticipation and confusion. After Dot had told him she wanted a divorce, he had really focused on the tour, putting everything he had into playing the best shows he could and interacting with the audience. This had resulted in the fans proclaiming this the best tour in years. Saying the boys were on fire and more energetic than ever. Even after all these years, the audience of mostly women, with the occasional reluctant spouse or boyfriend, was still filled with beauties of all ages. But Jon had felt no temptation of any kind. He did get great joy out of playing to his audience, but it was just that, playing. An act. He flirted, shook the money maker, bared the chest, more than he could recall in years. They had loved it. And he loved it. Loved performing, loved seeing a stadium of sold out seats. That was what it was all about. It had helped him get through the first few tough months. Most people might say he was burying his feelings. But that was how he often processed emotions, through song. That was the reason the songs had such feeling, emotion. Even romance. Those songs contained his heart and soul.

But now his head was filled with wonder at the events of the day. Instead of an annoying photo shoot, Jon found himself thinking about a certain lady in ways he had not allowed himself to think about anyone else in years and years. He found himself intrigued by her. He wanted to know more. There was a little bit of something, a voice perhaps, cautioning him. But after years of restraining and being a faithful husband, even while on the road, it was a hard habit to break and just let his feelings go. He told himself it was ok, he was not attached. No one was going to slap his hand for admiring a pretty lady, spending hours talking to her and asking to see her again. Katie was not the type to fall at his feet like some women were. Even though it was clear to him that she was a big fan, and might appreciate his assets like millions of other women. She had a strong core, and was not just a willow bending to the wind. Maybe that is why he was feeling an attraction to her. That would be no surprise, he had always been attracted to confident, self assured women. As he saw the skyline of Boston approaching, he realized he was going to have some careful planning to do before Saturday. This must be a very special dinner for a very special lady.

The next morning Katie slept in later than she had in weeks. The sun woke her up as it inched over the trees, warming her cheek through the bedroom window. She opened her eyes and saw it was already 10 a.m. She was shocked she had slept so late, with the excitement of the previous day. The house was still quiet as she padded down the stairs and into the kitchen. The kids must still be asleep. She flipped on the coffee maker and opened the front door, testing the morning air. It was going to be a warm, yet dry day, in the 80s. She was going to take the kids riding today, so they could have some time to hang out before they took off for the month. Riding was that one special time they had together where they could connect as a family. No tv or video games, no computers or cell phones. Just back to nature. As she poured the coffee she could hear movement upstairs. It was time to start the day. On her way up stairs, Katie met Brandon in the hallway. He still looked a bit like a little boy.

"Morning, sweetie. You ready to ride?" Katie asked as she kissed him on the forehead and ruffled his dark hair.

"Hey mom. You know it, can't wait." He said as a yawn overtook.

"Great. Get some breakfast and wake up Sophia while I take a quick shower, K?

"Aww, do I have to? She is grumpy when she wakes up. Bitchy even." He groaned.

"Brandon! You don't use that type of language." Katie scolded him.

"Sorry. But she is." He muttered as he went downstairs.

Katie turned on the shower, and took another sip of coffee as she looked ahead to the day. She breathed a deep sigh of pleasure at the feeling of the hot stream falling over her neck and shoulders. It was going to be a great day, she thought as she smiled to herself.
