Chapter 8

Jon rolled over and peeked at the clock out of one half opened eye, Saturday morning, 9 a.m. He stretched every limb and let out a sigh. Then a slow smile spread across his face. He had a bit of work to do before this evening, so he better get moving. He got up and opened the drapes on the hotel window. It was a sunny day, with a blue sky and the beautiful skyline of Boston greeted him. He decided to order a light breakfast from room service, head to the gym for a good, hard workout, then a soak in the bathtub. He would then start on his quest. He smiled again as he thought about the plans for the evening, as he looked out over the buildings towards the west. Towards a certain town where a certain lady with beautiful green eyes was slowly coming out of her own slumber.

She felt something warm on her cheek as she slowly opened her eyes. The sun was once again streaming through the window promising a perfect summer day. This morning Katie woke feeling alert and ready to take on the world. Or at least the shopping mall. No coffee necessary. She had dropped Brandon and Sophia off with their dad after dinner last night. She and the children had a lovely day, riding and stopping for a picnic by a little pond near the riding trails. Normally Katie felt rather empty and sad when she dropped off the children for extended periods of time. And she knew she would miss them like crazy. But she really did need some time to focus on herself. And the prospect of her date with Jon tonight was a very good distraction. There were a number of things she had to take care of before Jon's car and driver came to pick her up. A new outfit was in order, a trim and a pedicure. This was really more pampering than she ever did for herself, but the events of the evening called for it.

After a quick run on the treadmill and a shower, Katie hopped into her car and was off to the mall. She had an idea of what she was looking for. Something sophisticated, yet slightly sexy. Nothing too wild, but something that made a statement. The mall doors had just opened when she arrived. This early it was still quiet, just a few customers browsing the racks. Katie went into her favorite department store and headed towards the evening clothes. She picked out a few dresses that caught her attention. Just as she was getting ready to find a dressing room, she spotted a little swatch of red on the rack. Pushing the other dresses aside she found a red dress, with thin straps and lightly gathered under the bust. It was simple, yet the fabric was a vibrant color and the fabric felt cool to the touch, most likely silk. It was worth trying on at the very least. After all, it was her favorite color. In the dressing room she slipped the cool silk over her head, letting it fall to just above her knees. She turned towards the mirror. Katie found herself holding her breath for a brief moment. It fit her perfectly. The fabric fit snugly over the bust area, gathered slightly below and fell softly away from the body in graceful folds. The thin straps accented her shoulders. And the color brought out the deep auburn tones in her hair. Bingo. She had found the dress. She smiled as she twirled back and forth in front of the mirror. Envisioning the perfect pair of strappy black heels, she took the dress off, rang it up and she was off to the shoe store.

As she left the shoe store, her cell phone rang. Checking the number she saw it was Jon.

"Hello there!" she answered rather giddily.

"Hi, Katie. I just wanted to let you know what time the car would arrive. How does 6 p.m. sound?" Jon asked, his voice as smooth as honey.

Katie smiled as a warmth spread through her from hearing his voice, "That sounds perfect. I can't wait. It has been awhile since I have gone into the city for dinner, so I am really looking forward to it."

"As am I, Katie, as am I. I will see you soon!" Jon answered, the anticipation slightly evident in his voice.

Katie put her phone back into her handbag, smiling as she headed off to her pedicure.

After taking a quick soak in the tub, Jon was dressed and finished drying his hair. He had a few phone calls to make in order for the evening to work out as planned. He had already phoned the hotel manager asking if he could reserve the hotel restaurant for the evening. They were more than happy to oblige. Next was the call to the concierge desk to order flowers, check with the head chef on menu choices and to pick out the finest wine to compliment the evening fare. And lastly was the choice of what to wear. He was normally not picky about his clothing choices. He certainly enjoyed designer duds as much as the next person. But he usually had a few select favorites in his closet that he tended to wear over and over again. Opening up the wardrobe doors, he contemplated the choices. Since it was summer, nothing very formal or constricting would do. He picked out a pair of boot cut blue jeans, a pair of black leather boots, and a deep royal blue, silk shirt. It was similar to one he had worn on the tour, that always seemed to get a good reaction from the crowd. So he figured he couldn't go wrong. Jon also grabbed a black sport coat to throw over the shirt. Looking at his watch he realized he only had a couple of hours before his driver would be bringing Katie to the front door of the hotel.

Katie finished up her make up, and studied her hair. She decided to leave it down for the evening. Even after a trim, it still hit the middle of her back. She slipped the red dress over her head and dressed up her ears with simple gold hoops. The vibrant color of the dress and her hair would really make any other jewelry unnecessary. She finished off her ensemble with the black sandals and stepped in front of the mirror to check out her efforts. She had to admit, she was a striking vision. She had to smile to herself. It felt so good to dress up and make an effort for once. It had been awhile since she had gone all out like this for an evening. Sure, she and Becca would go out dancing or for drinks with friends once in awhile. But the best that resulted in was a nice pair of jeans, heels and a dressier top. Checking the clock on her nightstand, she realized she had ten minutes until Jon's car arrived. Grabbing a small black beaded purse, she headed downstairs. Just as she flipped the outside light to the porch on, she saw a car turning into the driveway. A man dressed in a black jacket and pants got out and came up to the door. Katie opened the door, grabbing a black finely knit shawl in case she caught a chill.

"Ms. McKensie. I am here to drive you into Boston for the evening. I am Christoph, Mr. Bon Jovi's driver. Mr. Bon Jovi made sure that you will be in the best of hands. Will you please follow me?" He held out his hand to her.

Katie had to smile to herself. This was going to be a very special evening. She took his hand as he guided her down the front porch steps. She checked out the car as he led her around to the back seat. It was a black Hummer. Jon seemed to be partial to black vehicles. She slid into the leather seat. Once settled, Christoph asked "Would you like a glass of champagne, my lady? Or other refreshment?"

"Just some water would be lovely, Christoph, if you have it."

"Certainly." He opened a cooling box located in the back of the Hummer and presented her with a bottle of sparkling water that he poured into a glass. She took a long slow sip, leaned back and let out a sigh as she smiled. After putting the glass into a holder located in the arm rest, she relaxed for the short ride into the city.

Soon the lights of Boston greeted her. It was a beautiful sight, the lights buildings against the deep blue sky. The Hummer drove smoothly into the city, winding through the curvy streets of Boston, coming to a stop in front of one of Boston's finest luxury hotels. Katie noticed the butterflies creeping up again as Christoph opened the door and took her hand, helping her out. Once out of the car he offered her his arm. She graciously took it as the main hotel doors were opened by the bellman.

"Good evening, Ms. McKensie. Welcome to Hotel Franchesca. Enjoy your evening." The bellman politely said as he smiled at her. Katie nodded and said "Thank you."

She couldn't help but feel like a little girl playing dress up. Christoph steered her to the left towards two glass doors that led to the restaurant. Katie noticed there seemed to be no one else around this evening. A server smiled as he opened the door for them. Katie smiled back, and as she turned her head forward, she was greeted with a sight that took her breath away....
