Catching a bit of a chill, Katie suggested they go back to the room. Once they were back inside, Jon asked Katie if she would mind listening to him pick out a few ideas on the guitar.
"I would love it!" She said kicking off her sandals and settling on the sofa. After taking his jacket off, Jon pulled a chair up and began strumming a few notes. Katie curled her feet up under her and listened to the bits and pieces of songs Jon was working on. After a while Jon noticed a yawn escape from Katie. He set the guitar down and said, "What do you say we call it a night?"
Katie nodded as another big yawn overtook. "That is a good idea. All this sea air is really getting to me."
Jon stood up and took her hands in his. He gave her a soft kiss on the lips and said, "Get comfortable and come join me."
She changed into her pajamas, brushed her teeth and went back to Jon's room. He already look very comfortable laying on the bed, propped up against the pillows and the sheet up to his waist. Katie climbed into the bed, snuggling up next to him. He smells so good, she thought. Letting out a big sigh, she sank deeper into the pillows, and his arms. Jon kissed her on the head thinking how right it felt holding her like this. Sometimes the intensity of his growing feelings shocked even him. He really could get used to this. He slid down to lay next to her, wrapping her up in his embrace. She was so soft and tempting. He could feel her breath becoming shallow and steady. He realized she was drifting off. Her last thought was how perfectly safe and at peace she felt in his arms. Jon closed his eyes and breathed in her scent, following not far behind into blissful slumber.
The morning dawned bright and early, as it does in the summer on the shore. Jon woke to find Katie's beautiful behind pressed up against him, causing him to wake with a raging hard on. He kissed the back of her neck gently, and stroked her breast, until she stirred. Jon was slow and deliberate in his passion, making easy love to her as the first rays of sun washed them in morning light.
After breakfast and a leisurely soak in the tub, they decided to go riding. Finding a stable not far away, they spend the afternoon picking through new trails and territory.
The remainder of their days in Rockport were spent in a similar manner, exploring not only the countryside and shoreline, but also each other. As the week drew to a close, though sorry to leave the Inn, Katie was looking forward to the week ahead. Jon had asked her to join him at his penthouse in New York for a few days, and the prospect really excited her. She would get a close up look at the life of a rock star, at least the behind the scenes look, as she was sure they would lay as low as possible there. There were so many more places to be spotted and people to see them. She couldn't think of much she would rather do than be with him in the penthouse anyway. Not letting herself think too far beyond that, she was determined to live in the moment. The more her feelings for him grew, the more she avoided thinking about the future.
Thursday morning they woke and packed up. As Katie was packing up in her room, which did not get much use the rest of that week, Jon looked around the suite with bittersweet feelings. It had been an amazing week with her. Though their time was not ending, Jon knew things would not be as peaceful, nor as easy, going forward, as the past week had been. During the quiet moments, he had let his thoughts wander into the future. Despite the fact of his divorce being so recent, just months ago, he couldn't deny how his feelings for Katie had grown. At first he just lived in the moment, not daring to entertain the thought this could be anything more than a short tryst. But after waking with her in his arms every morning, and falling asleep to the rhythm of her breath every night, he realized he wanted her in his life. Needed her in his life. He knew in New York plans would be laid out for going forward. He knew he would never hurt her. But he would soon need to really hear how she felt as well. But, he told himself, never mind that now. Just take her to New York, show her what he was all about, and see where the pieces fell. He knew he wanted more. He could only hope that she did too.
Driving toward the Boston skyline, Jon knew he was facing saying goodbye for one night. They each had things to wrap up before leaving town. Jon was going to take an afternoon to touch base with his friend, Bill Belichick, and see how the Patriots were shaping up for the upcoming football season. Katie wanted to check in with Becca and call a couple of clients. He dropped Katie off at her house on the way to Foxboro Stadium. Sitting in her driveway he kissed her deeply, thinking how lonely it would be in his bed tonight.
Katie went inside, checking her messages and filing through the mail that Becca had left on the counter. Nothing urgent. She had told everyone she would be away, so no one had bothered to contact her. After unpacking her clothes from the week and starting laundry, Katie gave Becca a call, finding she must still be at the studio next door. She took a walk over to check her work mail and catch up from the week. Becca was proofing at the computer when Katie walked in.
Becca saw her come in and jumped up giving Katie a big hug. "You're back! How ARE you? Look at you! You look fantastic!" Becca exclaimed.
Katie laughed, "Yep, for a day and then I am off again."
"Off again? What are you doing next? Are you doing the New York trip?"
Katie had told Becca she was thinking about taking a trip to New York. But she hadn't told her with whom. "Yes, I am going to New York for a few days."
Becca nodded her approval. "Oh good. It will be so good for you."
"I am going with Jon." Katie said seriously.
Becca stopped short. "With Jon? Oh, your going to get together there. That will be fun!"
"No, Becs. I am staying at his penthouse with him." Becca contemplated what her friend was saying.
"Wow. That must have been some week in Rochport." Becca said. "I am a little worried about you." She took her friends hand looking at her with concern.
Katie understood. But she also knew there was no way she was going to turn back now. "Thank you, sweetie. I do appreciate it. I really do. And I will admit, my feelings have grown for him. But I am not thinking about anything beyond now. I just want to ride the wave as long as I can." Katie admitted.
Becca let out a long sigh. "Just be careful, huh? I have not seen you so happy in a long time. I love seeing you happy, but it also makes me nervous. If this was any other guy, a regular guy, I would not be so concerned. As wonderful as he seems, he is still a world famous rock star sought after by thousands of women. You can't forget that. Their life is different. They are used to meeting women, sleeping with them, you know. I just don't want to see you hurt."
"No, he isn't like that. Not at all. He is so much more than that. So much more." Katie defended.
"Alright, chick. Just know I am here, ok? If you should need that soft place to land, I will be here." Becca hugged her.
"I know. And that is why I love you so much." Katie said. "Now lets get up to speed here because I have to pack for New York City!"
Later that night after packing, Katie lay in bed listening to the night sounds. She reached out next to her, thinking how empty it felt. The realization of just how empty, scared her just a little bit.
A few miles to the east Jon lay in his hotel room looking out at the twinkling lights of the Boston skyline. Laying there alone only confirmed his decision that he wanted to hold her in his arms as long as she would let him.
